Target Audience

All board members and trustees who wish to be better equipped to ensure effective financial oversight of their organisation.

Outline

The board has responsibility for the financial oversight of the organisation and as such, individual board members need to be able to understand the financial statements presented to them. This course will seek to demystify the jargon surrounding financial statements to give you the skills and knowledge to be able to read and understand them, identify areas of concern within them and ask questions and follow through on those concerns to ensure you fulfil your oversight responsibilities.

Úna McDevitt

Úna Mc Devitt has over 25 years’ experience in delivering training to the not-for-profit and voluntary sector in both financial skills and soft skills. She is a fellow of Chartered Accountants Ireland and holds a Masters in Organisational Behaviour and has extensive experience of working with boards and staff in a range of organisations. Úna is on the board of a not-for-profit in the financial area and is also on the board of a number of community groups.

Outcomes

By the end of the session you will:

  • Understand your governance duty in relation to financial oversight.
  • Know how to read and interpret the key financial statements
  • Know the difference between financial accounts and management accounts
  • Know the role of internal controls in effective financial oversight
  • Know how to assess potential areas of concern within the financial statements and how to deal with them
