Succession Planning for Sustainable Leadership – Online 12/11/2026

Target Audience

Board Members, HR Subcommittee, CEO, Deputy CEO and Senior Management.

Outline

This single, focused workshop is designed to help the Board and senior management initiate a structured and professional approach to leadership succession. It will create shared understanding, assess current vulnerabilities, and outline clear next steps to ensure smooth leadership transition and organisational continuity. The objectives of this workshop are:

  • Establish the strategic and leadership context for transition.
  • Identify organisational risks and opportunities linked to leadership change.
  • Explore resource-based scenarios (reduced, steady, expanded).
  • Clarify leadership roles and responsibilities for key senior positions.
  • Agree next steps for documentation, mentoring, and communication.

Methodology

Delivered virtually via Zoom.

Instructor

Rita Kearney

With over 30 years’ experience across Ireland’s nonprofit, voluntary, and international development sectors, I specialise in training, consultancy, and mentoring in the areas most critical to sustainable impact - governance, strategic planning, risk management, board development, HR compliance, and funding strategy.

I bring both deep sectoral knowledge and a highly practical, values-driven approach to capacity-building. My training and consultancy engagements are grounded in sensitivity to organisational realities, respect for voluntary governance, and a commitment to meaningful, achievable improvement. I work with boards, CEOs, senior teams, and community leaders to embed strong governance, align with the Charities’ Governance Code, and unlock strategic direction.

Outcomes

  • Succession risk and opportunity map.
  • Draft responsibilities matrix for senior leadership roles.
  • Checklist for handover and documentation.
  • Communication framework outlining internal and external messaging.
  • Action timeline for implementing agreed next steps.
