Understanding & Preparing Budgets – In-person 25/03/2026

Target Audience

Anyone who has responsibility for preparing budgets and those who wish to understand them better.

Prerequisites

Participants should be familiar with Microsoft Excel basics. Laptops will be provided by Carmichael for the training session.

Outline

This course will help you to understand how to prepare a budget and how to use that budget as a tool to effectively manage the resources of your organisation. We will work through a number of examples using Microsoft Excel – participants are limited to 10 to allow maximum interaction.

Instructor

Úna McDevitt

Úna Mc Devitt has over 25 years’ experience in delivering training to the not-for-profit and voluntary sector in both financial skills and soft skills. She is a fellow of Chartered Accountants Ireland and holds a Masters in Organisational Behaviour and has extensive experience of working with boards and staff in a range of organisations. Úna is on the board of a not-for-profit in the financial area and is also on the board of a number of community groups.

Outcomes

By the end of the session you will:

  • Understand the role of budgeting within the annual strategic planning process
  • Know what the key components of a budget are
  • Know how to prepare assumptions and estimates for the budget
  • Know how to read the monthly variances of the budget V. actual
  • Understand the importance of reviewing and revising the budget in line with updated knowledge and information.
